Naci Özgüç was born in 1964. He started his music education at the age of four with his mother, soprano Müfide Özgüç. He studied piano and orchestra conducting at Hacettepe University, State Conservatory. He studied orchestra conducting with Gürer Aykal and Rengim Gökmen at the Conservatory. During his study, Özgüç worked with the pianist Fazıl Say. In this context, Özgüç interpreted Mithat Fermen’s “Concerto for Piano and Orchestra” for Ankara State Conservatory Grand Orchestra and Fazıl Say. He graduated from the Conservatory in 1988. In the same year, he went to the USA and studied with Lorin Maazel, J. Belohlavek and B. Balkwill in the Faculty of Music at Indiana University. He completed his master’s degree in 1991. Özgüç has conducted Turkish State Symphony orchestras and Bilkent Symphony orchestra. He premiered Kurt Weill’s “Mahagony” and Mozart’s “Zaide” with Ankara State Opera in Turkey. He also premiered Turgay Erdener’s operetta “İstanbulname” and “Mi’den Dört Bölüm” to the world. In addition, as a conductor, Özgüç premiered Fazıl Say’s “Nazım” and “Soloists for Piano, Chorus and Orchestra” to the world. Currently, he serves as a conductor and general music director in the Ankara State Opera and Ballet Orchestra.
