Prof. Dr. Nevzad Atlığ was born in Denizli, Sarayköy in 1925. He learned the violin from his father and composer Nazmi Atlığ. After graduating from the Faculty of Medicine at Istanbul University, Nevzad studied radiology. He played violin for the Istanbul University Choir. When Ercümend Berker left choir for his military service, Atlığ started serving as a chorister in the Istanbul University Choir.

Dr. Atlığ also worked as a chorister in the Istanbul Radio Turkish Classical Music. He served in the executive board of the Istanbul Conservatory. From 1954 to 1958, he worked as a director in the Istanbul Radio; and as a choister in the Istanbul Radio Classical Choir (1963-1976). In 1969, he was selected as the chairman of Turkish Music Commission, which belongs to the Ministry of Education. He was a member of TRT Board of directors. In 1976, he was appointed to a choister of the Ministry of Culture Turkish Classical Music Choir.

Dr. Atlığ has received many awards including an award of merit in the branch of Turkish Classical Music (1981), Turkish Culture Award (1983), Presidential Culture and Arts Grand Awards (1999), and the 17th Aydın Doğan Award (2013). In 1983, he was selected as a member of Atatürk Higher Institute of Culture, Language, and History. In 1984, he was appointed to the TRT Superior Board. Dr. Atlığ received a professorship in 1985 and the title of State Artist in 1987.
