Osman Nuri Özpekel was born in Erzurum in 1957. In 1975 he entered the Faculty of Letters at Istanbul University and Istanbul Municipal Conservatory; performed oud in the University′s Chorus. He studied music with famous Turkish traditional musicians such as Süheylâ Altmışdört, İsmâil Hakkı Özkan, Muazzam Sepetçioğlu and Ender Ergün. Özpekel received an influence from the style of music of Udi Nevres Bey, Şerif Muhiddin Targan and Yorgo Bacanos. After graduating from the Conservatory in 1979, Özpekel went to Edirne to work as a teacher of literature. He returned to Istanbul four years later and joined the State Classical Turkish Music Chorus as an oud player.
In 1980 Özpekel went to London and worked with jazz musician Keith Jarret at the October Gallery. In 1980-1984 Özpekel taught literature in Edirne. In 1983 he joined the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Istanbul State Classical Turkish Music Chorus, which was directed by Prof. Dr. Nevzat Atlığ. In 1984 Özpekel began teaching at Istanbul Technical University, Turkish Music State Conservatory. He has composed more than 120 works, half of which have been included into TRT repertoires. In 1996-1997 Özpekel presented a special weekly jazz TV program "Çamlıca′dan Kalamıs′a" and performed oud. He also performed with the State Chorus in Germany, France, Egypt, Tunisia and Cyprus. The following year, he became an oud instructor at the Istanbul Technical University State Conservatory of Turkish Music. He was invited to perform as a soloist in many foreign countries such as the Netherlands and the United States.
Özpekel released CDs entitled “Ud virtüözleri ve ud icrâcıları” (Kalan Music, 2004) and “Şerif Muhiddin Targan” (Kalan Music, 2007). He has collected numerous Ottoman compositions and music books for more than 25 years and created a rich archive. He published 100 works from them in a book. Özpekel has written many articles on music and literature for various magazines. In addition to it, he wrote an article entitled “Cumhuriyet Dönemi Türk Müziği” for Cumhuriyet Encyclopedia and “Şâhir ve Bestekâr Padişahlar” for Ottoman Encyclopedia (12 vols.) Özpekel compiled Kemâni (violinist) Nurhan Hekimoplu’s annual memories and published it as a book entitled “Bir Kemâni’nin Günlüğü” with Kaf Music Publications. Besides being a musician, Özpekel makes oud instruments and works on calligraphy. He currently performs at the State Chorus as well as Istanbul Technical University State Conservatory.
