Muhammet Sadrettin Özçimi was born in Konya in 1955. He is a son of Febzi Özçimi, who was a student of famous composer Sâdeddin Kaynak. After finishing primary, middle and high school in Konya, Sadrettin entered Istanbul Technical University, Turkish Music State Conservatory in Istanbul and studied ney and saz with Aka Gündüz Kutbay and Niyazi Sayın. He graduated in 1979. In 1977, as a ney player, he participated in the Istanbul State Classical Turkish Music Ensemble, which was conducted by Dr. Nevzad Atlığ. In 1980, he left the ensemble and returned to Konya. He then established Konya Municipality Turkish Music Chorus to teach Turkish music to high school students. After working for the Konya Municipality for 4 years, Özçimi served as a music tutor in Selcuk University in 1984. Later he founded the Department of Music Education in the Faculty of Education at Selçuk University with the ud player and composer Cınuçen Tanrıkorur. In 1986, Özçimi went back to Istanbul and started his mater’s degree at the Department of Religious Music in the Faculty of Theology of Marmara University. His master’s thesis “Musiki Bilgini Hızır Bin Abdullah’ın XV.yy’a ait Kitâbül-Edvâr” was published in a music magazine in 1999 and 2000. Between 1971 and 1999, Özçimi participated in the Mevlânâ Memorial Festival as a ney master. He also performed in the Konya Mysticism Music Ensemble, which belonged to the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Since 1987, he has played as a ney player at the Istanbul State Turkish Music Ensemble, which was founded by Tanbur player Prof. Necdet Yaşar.
Özçimi has participated in numerous concerts with different ensembles in Turkey and abroad including the USA, Germany, Holland, Spain, France, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Japan, Morocco, Bosnia and Iraq. As a soloist or ensemble member, he has recorded many cassettes and CD albums. With the Istanbul Fasıl Ensemble, in which he has been a member since 1994, Özçimi has recorded 7 documentary CDs and 7 cassettes.
Besides music activities, Özçimi is a master craftsman of making rosary (tesbih). In addition, Özçimi studied Ebru with Necmeddin Okyay, Mustafa Düzgünman and Alpasan Babaoğlu. His Ebru works have been exhibited not only in Turkey but also abroad.
