Prof. Dr. Selma Gökçen has studied cello with Leonard Rose, Channing Robbins, William Lincer, and Robert Mann. She graduated from Juilliard School. She completed her master’s and doctoral degree in Musical Arts at her alma mater. Gökçen received First Prize from the Geneva Conservatory of Music as a pupil of Guy Fallot, and has also studied privately with the late Pierre Fournier. She is the winner of several national competitions in the USA, including the Bryan Award of the North Carolina Symphony, the Houston Symphony Young Artists′ Competition, the North American Young Artists′ Competition, and the Flagler Mathews Auditions.

Gökçen has performed with L′Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Presidential Symphony in Ankara, the Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Symphony, the North Carolina Symphony, and the Aspen Philharmonia, among others. She has given recitals throughout the United States and Europe, and has toured in South America for the U.S. State Department. Her appearances have taken her to Australia, New Zealand and the People′s Republic of China, where she was invited to give recitals and master classes in Shanghai, the Sichuan province, and Beijing. With Dr. Jonathan Kramer and Bernard Greenhouse, she has presented a program “Pablo Casals: Artist of Conscience” in London, New York and Washington DC′s Kennedy Center.

In addition to solo appearances, Gökçen is an accomplished chamber musician and has participated in the Chamber Music West Festival in San Francisco, the Southeastern Music Festival, the Hindemith Festival in Oregon, and the Accademia Chigiana in Siena. She is a frequent guest in Spain, where she has performed with the Granados Quartet and in gala events honoring Spain′s greatest living composer Xavier Montsalvatge. She obtained STAT teaching certificate at the Centre for the Alexander Technique in London.

Her first CD “Songs and Dances” was recorded with pianist John Lenehan for the VDE-Gallo label. She was invited to record the complete works for cello by the Catalan composer Xavier Montsalvatge. Currently, Gökçen lives and works in London, where she is a member of the Alexander Technique Faculty of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
