Emel Sayın was born in Sivas in 1940. She began learning music from Arif Sami Toker. She continued to learn music from Münir Nurettin Selçuk. After finishing Uzunköprü Gazi Turhan Bey Middle School and Çapa High School, Sayın studied singing at Istanbul Municipality Conservatory for three years. She also learned singing from Alis Rosenthal, who was a teacher of Münir Nurettin Selçuk in France. Sayın took a solfeggio class from Muhittin Sadak. She sung a classic repertoire of Münir Nurettin Selçuk and was selected a “Voice Queen” in a contest, which was organized by Hürriyet Haber Agency. Sayın debuted in Necdet Yazar’s Casino in Ankara Gençilik Park, when she was 17 years old. In 1963, she started working in Ankara Radio as a soloist. With a suggestion of Egemen Bostancı, Sayın moved from Ankara to Istanbul and began singing as a soloist on the stage of Lalezâr Casino. She also transferred from Ankara Radio to Istanbul Radio. In Istanbul, Sayın has recorded many plaques and CDs. In addition, she has starred in many films such as “Mavi Boncuk” (1974) and TV dramas including “Aşkım Aşkım” (2001).
