Esra Abacioğlu Akcan entered the Faculty of Music and Stage Arts at Bilkent University in 1989. She also studied with Gölge Şekeramber, a soloist at the Ankara State Opera and Ballet. In 1996 Akcan continued her Master’s degree at Bilkent University, where she studied with various estimable artists. In 1999 she graduated from the Department of Vocal Training at Bilkent University as the first graduate. In the same year, she participated in the Master Class of Leyla Gencer.
Akcan became the first soprano artist of the Antalya State Opera and Ballet. She made her debut in the Antalya State Opera House with a role of "Violetta" in the operetta "La Traviata" in 2000. In 2001, she performed a role of "Hanna Glawari" in the premiere of Lehar’s operetta “Merry Widow” in the Antalya State Opera and Ballet. In 2002, she performed her role "Adina" in the premiere of Gaetano Donizetti’s opera "L’Elisir D’amone." In the same year, she performed in W.A. Mozart’s "Requiem." She then went to Austria to pursue her carrier with Kammersängerin Prof. Margarita Lilova. Akcan also worked with famous artists such as Max Cencic, a conductor, James Pierson, a corepetitor, and Prof. Ernst Maerzendorfer. Akcan performed in various concerts at the Vienna State Opera (Wiener Staatsoper) during the same period. In 2004, she performed a role of "Musetta" in Giacomo Puccini’s opera "La Boheme." In 2006 she made her recording of Chopin′s songs with a pianist and instructor Maria Nowotna. In 2008 Akcan gave a recital and sang many lieds, composed by W.A. Mozart, Giuseppe Verdi, Gaetano Donizetti, Richard Strauss and Leonard Bernstein, at the Vienna Konzert Haus Schubert-Saal. In the 2009/10 opera season, she performed a role of "Elettra" in W.A.Mozart’s opera "Idomeneo" as well as in his opera "The Abduction from the Seraglio" in the Aspendos International Festival. Akcan gave a concert and sang Beethoven’s "Ah! Perfido" with pianist Kamerhan Turan at the Konzert Haus Schubert-Saal in 2011. In the same year, she completed her interpretation studies on operas "The Abduction from the Seraglio" and "Ariadne auf Naxos" in Vienna. In 2011 she attended the program called "Liederabend" and sang many lieds of Mozart, Schubert, Chopin, Lizst, Rachmaninoff, Yalcin Tura and Selman Ada with Mag. Dieter Paier at the Bösendorfer Concert Hall in Vienna. In 2012, she sang Mozart, Liszt, Rossini and Richard Strauss’ lieds at the Bösendorfer Concert Hall.
Akcan has sung in various national and international concerts and festivals. In 2013, she joined the International North Aegean Festival, where she studied with Diva Cheryl Studer and performed in many concerts in Athens, Mytilene (Lesvos) and Chios. In addition to it, she performed a role of Blonde in the opera "Die Entführung aus dem Serail" in the Aspendos Opera Festival. Akcan performed a role of "Rosalinda" in the opera “Die Fledermaus.” She performed "Elvira" in Vincenzo Bellini’s opera "I Puritani" in the Ankara State Opera House.
Since 2015, Akcan works as a soloist in the Istanbul State Opera House. She performed a role of "Elvira" in Vincenzo Bellini’s opera "I Puritani" and sang W.A. Mozarts’ Die Zauberflöte (Königin der Nacht) in the Ankara State Opera House in the 2015/16 opera season. Esra Abacioğlu Akcan currently continues her professional career with domestic and international projects.
