Tahir Aydoğdu was born in Istanbul in 1959. He started his music studies in his high school years and attended various chorus activities. He received his first music instruction from his father Gültekin Aydoğdu, who is a qanun player at TRT Ankara Radio and the conductor of Turkish Fasıl Ensemble. Tahir was also trained by various Turkish Music authorities. Following his graduation from the Physics Department of the Middle East Technical University in 1983, Aydoğdu was appointed to the TRT Ankara Radio Turkish Music Ensemble as a qanun player. Besides various concerts he gave in Turkey, Aydoğdu also represented Turkey in many music centers in the US, Europe and Asia with the Modern Folk Trio, with which he worked for eight years. With the Asiaminor Jazz Ensemble, Aydoğdu performed in many concerts and attended various workshops and festivals abroad. As a member of Asiaminor, he released many CD’s including “Along the street” (Vienna 1991), “Longanova” (Ankara 1997) and “Cat’s Dream” (Ankara 1998).
Aydoğdu has also released other CD’s such as “Yahya Kemal in the music of Cinuçen Tanrıkorur” with the oud composer; “Balkanataolia” with the jazz singer Yıldız İbrahimova; “From Sufi to Flamenco” with the Dutch guitarist Eric Vaarzon Morel; “Afife” Turkish Ballet, which was composed by Turgay Erdener with Tchaikovsky Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Rengim Gökmen in Moscow in 2000; and “Ferid Alnar”, which was produced by Ş. Kahramankaptan and sponsored by TCMB with the Anatolian Strings Quartet in 2000. In 1999, Aydoğdu established the Ensemble Ancyra. With his qanun, he accompanied the orchestra and dancers in the ballet performances of Selman Ada’s “Ali Baba & Forty Kharamies” with Ankara State Ballet & Opera Orchestra, which was conducted by B.Hoinic; Turgay Erdener’s ballet “Afife” with the Presidential Symphony Orchestra, which was conducted by R.Gökmen. Aydoğdu arranged the music for the “Harem” ballet, which was choreographed by Merih Çimenciler.
Besides various concerts with different groups, Aydoğdu has given many seminars about qanun and Turkish Music in Turkey and abroad including Hannover Hochshule, Ankara Middle East Technical University, Gazi University and Konya Selçuk University. He has also directed classical Turkish music choirs. Aydoğdu has been awarded various prizes such as the appreciation prize, which was given by the Senate of Middle East Technical University in 2001. His life story was also taken as a master subject at the Turkish Music Conservatory of Ege University. Aydoğdu is a member of the World Cimbalom Association. Currently, he continues performing at the TRT Ankara Radio.
