Tülay German

Tülay German was born in Istanbul in 1935. She started singing at the age of four. She sang Schubert’s “Serenade” and “Linden Tree” at the Ayşe Abla’s Saturday program on Ankara Radio. German learned how to play piano from Ferdi Statser. In 1956, she finished at Üsküdar American College for Girls, and started singing at Süreyya Casino in Ankara. Between 1960 and 1962, she became famous as a jazz singer. She then sang on TV and radio programs, and participated in festivals with different artists such as Yurdaer Doğulu, Erol Büyükburç, and Tanju Okan. In 1962, German prepared the program “Çoksesli Türk Popüler Müziği” with Erdem Buri. She also recorded albums such as “Burçak Tarlası” and “Tract”. German worked with famous artist François Rabbath, and sang for Zülfü Livaneli’s album “Yiğidim Aslanım”. In 1966, she went to Paris to record her album. She sang on radio and TV programs, and gave many concerts in France, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Tunisia, Morocco, Holland, the US and Brazil.  Her Turkish language album, which was recorded in France, was awarded a signal reward by Charles Cross Academy in 1981. After giving concerts in Holland in 1987, German retired from the stage, but released three albums “Nazım Hikmet’e Saygı” (1987), “The Song of Poets” (1988), and “Yunus’tan Nazım’a” (1999) under the Kalan Music label. German is also a writer. She has published two books: “Erdemli Yıllar” (Istanbul: Bilgi Publish House, 1996) and “Düşmemiş Bir Uçağın Karakutusu” (Istanbul: Çınar Publications, 2001). She has also been featured in “Adam Sanat” magazine since 1999.
