Rüstü Asyalı was born in Ankara in 1947. He started theater education at a class in the Head Office of the Ankara Community Centre during his high school time. In 1963, he participated in a team of Children’s Hour at Ankara Radio. After graduating from the Ankara State Conservatory in 1970, Asyalı began working as an actor at the State Theaters. His performance as Keloğlan in the program of Children’s Hour at Ankara Radio was praised very much. He then acted the role of Keloğlan in four films between 1971 and 1975. Besides Keloğlan, Asyalı performed in other films such as “Yaman Delikanlı” and “Dangalak.” He was one of the founders of the private theater group “Oyuncular Birliği” in Ankara.
Asyalı has shown his successful performance in many plays such as “Keşanlı Ali Destanı,” “Fil Adam,” “Düşler Yolu”, and “Azizname”. He has also directed many plays including “Kanlı Nigar,” “Ah Şu Gençler,” “Ölümsüzler,” “Yunus Diye Göründüm,” and “Soruşturma” at the State Theatre. As a guest director, Asyalı has also directed “Masal Var-Masalcık Var” and “Ah Şu Gençler” at the Pamukbank Children and Young Theatre and “Ah Şu Gençler” at the Nisa Serezli-Tolga Aşkıner Theatre. In the Ankara Ekin Theatre, Asyalı worked as a stage director for the play “Hasret,” which was written for Nazım Hilmet. In that play, Asyalı portrayed the role of Nazım Hikmet.
Since 1963, Asyalı has also performed in many TV dramas, radios, art, and culture programs. He wrote scenarios for TV drama “İki Öküz,” “Bir Varmış, Bir Yokmuş”, and “Türkülerle Oyunlar” and worked as a director and actor. He also acted the role of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in the documentary “Atatürk Anlatıyor.” Recently, he performed in the “Ben Bir İnsan” at the State Theatre. In addition, Asyalı read poems for recording the CD “Şiirlerle Atatürk’ü Anlamak,” which was prepared by the Language Association (Dil Derneği) and the Konak Municipality.
Asyalı served as general secretary in the State Artists Association, as director in the State Theatre Foundation, as general director in the State Theatre Artists Association, and as general director in the Association of Voice Actors. He was a board member in the State Theaters and the Art Society. In 2008, he became a chief stage director in the State Theatre. Asyalı has also given classes of intonation, speakers, vocalization, and acted at the Başkent Academy of Communication Sciences.
