Haluk Bilginer was born in Izmir in 1954. He began acting in many plays under Cahit Gürkan in the last grade of high school. He won second prize in a theater competition between high schools, which was organized by Democrat Izmir News Paper. He finished Izmir Turkish College. With the invitation of Ragıp Haykır, Bilginer started working as a guest actor in the Izmir State Theatre. After graduating from the Ankara State Conservatory, he worked in the State Theater. In 1977, Biginer went to London to study at London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Between 1980 and 1993, he performed in many plays such as “My Fair Lady,” “Macbeth,” “Pal Joey,” “Belami” and “Phantom of the Opera” in the British Theater. He also acted in TV drama series including “EastEnders,” “Glory Boys,” “Murder of a Moderate Man,” “Bergerac,” “Memories of Midnight,” and “The Bill”.
In 1987, Bilginer returned to Istanbul to shoot the film “Gecenin Öteki Yüzü.” He also starred in Hollywood movies as a minor actor. In Turkey, Bilginer became popular after he presented a program “Sıcağı Sıcağına” on Show TV. He has acted in more than 28 Turkish films such as Tomris Giritlioğlu’s “80. Adım,” “İstanbul Kanatlarımın Altında,” “Usta Beni Öldürsene” and “Masumiyet.” In 1990, Bilginer founded the Theater Studio with Ahmet Levendoğlu and Zuhal Olcay. Bilginer has performed leading roles in 14 theater plays such as “Aldatma,” “Kan Kardeşleri,” “Derin Bir Soluk Al,” “Çöplük,” “Balkon,” “Cimri,” and “7.”
For the role of “Bekir” in the film “Masumiyet,” Bilginer won his first award "Best Supporting Actor" in the 34th Antalya Film Festival (1997). He also won "Best Actor Prize" in the 10th Ankara Film Festival (1998) and "Jean Carment Prize" (1998). Bilginer founded his second theater, the Oyun Atölyesi, with Zuhal Olcay in 1999. During this era, he starred in many TV dramas such as “Eyvah Kızım Büyüdü” and “Tatlı Hayat.” In 2004, he was awarded “Best Actor" for his role in the film “Neredesin Firuze” in the 9th Sadri Alışık Awards. He also received "Best Actor" in the 18th Ankara International Film Festival in 2006. In 2007, Bilginer received "Best Actor" for his role in the film “Polis” in the Ankara International Film Festival.
