Ülkü Ayvaz was born in Bayburt in 1955. He began his stage career as a high school student. He performed leading roles in many plays such as “Nalınlar” (N.Cumalı), “Batak Göl” (Ö.İ. Özturanlı), “Cimri” (Moliere), and “Bir Delinin Hatıra Defteri” (Gogol). Ayvaz won “the best actor” award twice in a competition of İLTÖ (1974) and AKM (1976). In the 1970’s, he began writing short plays. They were staged at high schools including Davutpaşa High School, Paşabahçe, Kadıköy and Kocamustafapaşa Public Centers, and at Istanbul Technical University. Ayvaz graduated from the Theater Department in the Faculty of Letters at Ankara University in 1980. His play “Leylim Leylim” was published in the “Tiyatro 74” magazine and staged in the Theater Department at the Institute for Social Sciences of Ankara University.
Ayvaz has been serving as a dramatist in the Istanbul State Theatre. In addition to plays, he has also published radio plays and story books. His first radio play was “Turne Çiçekleri” (1975). Ayvaz has written over 36 plays and prepared programs “Çocuklarla Başbaşa” and “Gençlerle Başbaşa” for TRT. His works have been awarded many times and translated into different languages. They have been played not only in Turkey, but also Russia, Macedonia, and Germany. Ayvaz has also written essays, criticques and analyses in newspapers such as Hürriyet, Cumhuriyet, Yeni Yüzyıl, and magazines including Çağdaş Eleştiri, Mets Çeviri, Varlık, Gösteri, Türkiye Yazıları, Eğitim Mücadelesi, and Sanat Emeği.
