Zuhal Olçay was born in Istanbul in 1957. She entered the State Conservatory in Ankara and graduated in 1976. She worked at the State Theatre for several years and performed in many plays such as Othello, Empty Cradle, I Promise, and The Seagull. Olçay won Avni Dilligil Theatre Special Award in 1986 for her acting in the The Seagull. Since 1983, she has appeared in various television and cinema productions such as Parmak Damgası (1985), Gecenin Öteki Yüzü (1987), Ateşten Günler (1987), Amansız Yol (1985), Dünden Sonra Yarından Önce (1987), Sahte Cennete Veda (Farewell to False Paradise) (1988), Medcezir Manzaraları (1989), Gizli Yüz (1990), 80. Adım (1996), and İstanbul Kanatlarımın Altında (1996). Olçay won her first film award for her role in the Ihtiras Fırtınası in 1984. In the following year, she received "Best leading actress" for her role in the Amansız Yol. She won the "Berlin Golden Band" award for her role (Elif) in the Farewell to False Paradise.
Between 1990 and 1998, Olçay acted in many plays including Betrayal (1990-92), Blood Brothers (1991), Hysteria (1996-97), and Balcony (1998). She established her own theatre company Oyun Atolyesi in 1999. She won the "Afife Theatre" Award in the category of "Best Leading Actress in a Comedy Play" for Steven Berkoff’s Kvetch. She also acted in Tom Kempinski’s Separation. Olçay won the "Afife Theatre" Award again in the category of Best Actress for her role "Nancy" in Philippe Blasband’s Nathalie.
Along with her careers in theatre and cinema, Zuhal Olçay started singing professionally after she acted Evita, which is one of the most famous musicals in the world. She acted in Nisan Akman’s cinema production, Dünden Sonra Yarından Önce, and sang the song of this film. Olçay won numerous awards for her role Sükran in Tayfun Pirselimoğlu’s Hiçbiryerde. She sang the songs for the sound track of the film which were composed by Cengiz Onural.
Olçay has worked with Mehmet Teoman, Vedat Sakman, Selim Atakan, and Bülent Ortaçgil and has released 6 albums: Kucuk Bir Oyku Bu (1990), Oyuncu (1993), İki Çift Laf (1996), Ihanet (1998), Basucu Sarkilari (2001), and Basucu Sarkilari 2 (2005).
