Ferhat Kurlu was born in Fatsa in 1976. He graduated from the Faculty of Theology at On Dokuz Mayıs University. During his studies at university, he met Muzaffer Ecevit, and learned rik’a script from him. In 1996, Kurlu met the master Hasan Çelebi and learned sülüs and nesih scripts from him. In 2000, he obtained his professional license from Çelebi at IRCICA. In 2001, Kurlu started working as an imam in the Department of Religious Affairs. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad, and has received many awards in national and international calligraphy competitions. Kurlu has written calligraphy on inscriptions, domes and bands in many mosques and fountains. He has also served in many restoration works. Currently, Kurlu continues to work with Çelebi, and teaches calligraphy in Istanbul.
