Hüseyin Hüsnü Türkmen was born in Trabzon in 1970. He graduated from the Department of Traditional Turkish Handicrafts in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Mimar Sinan University in 1998. He learned rik’a writing from Mahmut Öncü. Türkmen worked with Prof. Dr. Ali Alpaslan for 6 years, and learned rik’a, dîvânî, ta’lîk writings. He also worked with Assistant Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Gündüz and learned sülüs, nesih writings. In addition to calligraphy, Türkmen learned how to make ceramics from Prof. Dr. Kerim Silivrili and Prof. Dr. Sitare Turan Bakır. He also learned paper restoration work from Saadet Gazi. After his graduation from university, Türkmen taught calligraphy at vocational classes belong to the Fatih Municipality, between 1999 and 2001. Since 2002, he has taught at ISMEK.
Between 2000 and 2005, Türkmen learned sülüs and nesih writings, and the art of ebru from Fuat Başar, and obtained a professional license. Since 2004, he has worked on nesih writing with Mehmet Özçay. In 2007, Türkmen began working on sülüs writing with Osman Özçay. He continues his master’s degree at his alma mater, and work on celî talîk, celî dîvânî writing with Associate Prof. M. Savaş Çelik.
Türkmen has participated in many exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. He has also participated in many competitions, and received several awards. In 2003, he received first prize for his calligraphies “Celi Divan-i” and “Tövbe Suresi” in the competition of State Turkish Decorative Arts, which was organized by the Turkish Minsitry of Culture and Tourism. In 2005, he was awarded first prize for his calligraphies “Celi Talik” and “Af eden af edilir” in the competition of State Turkish Decorative Arts. In 2007, he received second prize in a calligraphy competition; and mention award in the section of Celi Divan-i in the IRCICA International Calligraphy Competition. Currently, Türkmen continues to work at his workship in Küçük Ayasofya in Istanbul.
