Prof. Muhittin Serin

Prof. Muhittin Serin serves as a professor on Turkish and Islamic Art History in the Faculty of Theology at Marmara University. He is a calligrapher as well as an academician. He received a certification from Kemal Batanay. Serin has published several books on calligraphy including “Meşk Murakkaları”, “Hat Sanatı ve Meşhur Hattatlar”, “Hattat Aziz Efendi”, and “Hattat Şeyh Hamdullah”  (Kubbealtı Culture and Art Foundation Publications). He has had many calligraphy exhibitions both in Turkey and abroad. Serin participated in the Silk Road Festival, which was organized by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. In 2002 he gave a calligraphy seminar during the exhibition “Empire of the Sultans: Ottoman Art from the Khalili Collection” (May 19–July 28, 2002) in the North Carolina Museum of Art. In 1993 Serin had a solo exhibition in the Fine Arts Museum of Indiana University. He participated in the exhibition of Turkish and Islamic Art in Indiana University, the Fine Art Museum (1994) and the First Islamic World Calligraphy Festival, which was organized by the Iranian Cultural Ministry and the Museum of Modern Art (1997). He has written many articles on calligraphy for national and international magazines and participated in numerous conferences in Turkey and abroad. Prof. Serin wrote an article on the art of calligraphy and illumination for the Turkish Religious Foundation, Islam Encyclopedia as well.
