Osman Özçay was born in Çaykara, Trabzon in 1963. He graduated from the Faculty of Theology at Marmara University in 1986. With his brother Mehmet Özçay, Osman started learning calligraphy from Fuat Başar in 1982, and obtained his professional license. After moving to Istanbul, he met Prof. Uğur Derman and learned about the art of calligraphy. Özçay has written sülüs, celi sülüs, nesih and muhakkak scripts. He has participated in many group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. In 1986 and 1989, he participated in the international calligraphy competitions, which were organized by the Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA) and won second and third prizes in the categories of celi sülüs and sülüs scripts. He received a first prize in the calligraphy competition, which was organized by the Maktab al-Shahid Kuwait Institute in 1997.
Özçay has had several solo exhibitions with Mehmet Özçay in Istanbul (1996), Abu Dhabi (1998), Sharjah (1999), and Dubai (2003). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. His calligraphy works can be seen in many museums and private collections in Turkey and foreign countries.
