Fatih Özkafa was born in Konya in 1974. In 1992, he entered the Department of Public Administration in the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences at Selçuk University. In 1994, he began taking a thuluth nashk course from Khattat Hüseyin Öksüz (Qunawi) after he practiced calligraphy with Tahir Güçlü. In 1996, Özkafa graduated from the Department of Public Administration at Selçuk University. After completing his compulsory military service in Istanbul, he worked in a private sector for a while. In 2002 he obtained a professional certificate of thuluth naskh from Asst. Prof. Hüseyin Öksüz. Özkafa also took divanî and ta’lîk courses. He also studied with prominent masters including Prof. M. Uğur Derman, Prof. Fevzi Günüç, Mehmed Özçay, Osman Özçay, Davut Bektaş, Ali Toy and Savaş Çevik for his classic/modern calligraphy design works and scientific studies.
In 2003, Özkafa completed his Master′s degree at the Institute of Social Sciences, Division of Business Administration of Selçuk University. He then pursued his doctoral degree in Traditional Turkish Arts at the Institute of Art History of Selçuk University. In 2005, he was appointed as a research assistant at the Faculty of Fine Arts. In the same year, he became a lecturer and Deputy Head of the Department. In 2008 he obtained his doctoral degree in Turkish Arts at Selçuk University with his doctoral dissertation entitled "Band Scripts of Istanbul’s Sultanate Mosques." In 2009 he was appointed as an assistant professor and chosen as a member of the Faculty Executive Board. Dr. Özkafa has written many articles on calligraphy and published them in various scientific journals and magazines. He has attended many international conferences to present his papers. Özkafa′s stories and essays have been published in various literature journals.
In addition to his academic career, Dr. Özkafa has prepared many calligraphy works and participated in over 60 calligraphy competitions and exhibitions. His calligraphy works have been exhibited in many international exhibitions primarily in Istanbul, Abu Dhabi, Cairo, Tehran, Izmir, Konya, Bursa, Kayseri, Erzurum, Kocaeli, Malatya, and Şanlıurfa; and can be seen in numerous public and private collections in Turkey and abroad. He received an incentive award in Thuluth scripts in the 6th International Calligraphy Competition in the name of Mir Imad al-Haseni (2004) and the 8th International Calligraphy Competition in the name of Badawi al-Dirani (2010), organized by International Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA). Dr. Özkafa is a board member of the Writers Union of Turkey Konya Branch. He currently gives undergraduate courses at Selçuk University.
