Savaş Çevik was born in Antalya in 1953. He graduated from the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts in 1976. In the same year, he started working as an assistant of Prof. Emin Barı at his alma mater. In 1973, he started learning calligraphy, rika and tâlik writing from Kemal Batanay; sülüs and nesih writing from Hâmit Aytaç. Çevik then learned dîvânî, celî dîvânî from Prof. Ali Alpaslan. In 1986, Çevik won first prize and two mention prizes in the International Hâmit Aytaç Calligraphy Competition, which was organized by IRCICA. He has also received more than 30 awards in Turkey and abroad. Çevik completed his doctoral degree in 1983, and received the title of Assistant Professor in 1987. In addition to classic calligraphy, he works in modern calligraphy. He has had 22 solo exhibitions, and has participated in 63 group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. His works can be seen in many collections in Turkey and foreign countries. After retiring from Marmara University in 2002, Çevik started teaching at Haliç University and Doğuş University.
