Turan Sevgili was born in Erzurum, Oltu in 1945. He finished primary, middle and high school education in Çorum. After graduating from the Faculty of Theology at Istanbul University in 1967, he pursued his study at the Textile Department in the Faculty of Fine Arts of Mimar Sinan University. In 1963, Sevgili started learning 6 kinds of calligraphy (Kufi, Sülüs, Nesih, Ta’lik, Divani and Celi Divani) from Hamid Aytaç. Between 1981 and 1982, he taught calligraphy in the Faculty of Theology in Bursa. His works can be seen in many private collections and mosques in Turkey. He prepared Kur’an-ı Kerim for the Mektebet-ül Nahda-ı Hadise publications in Saudi Arabia. He also prepared an album, which contains portraits and works of famous calligraphers. In 2006, Sevgili had his solo exhibition at the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art. Since 1963, he has continued to work and trained students at his workshop in Cağaloğlu in Istanbul.
