Yasemin Büyükaşık was born in Antakya. She started helping out with her family business of silk weaving when she was a child. She studied on textiles in Celal Bayar University in Manisa. For the past two years, she has been working professionally in her family business, which was initiated by her grandfather who used to weave at his home in Harbiye, Antakya and sold those textiles at the local bazaar. The family would weave less expensive cloths previously, but with the initiation of her father Refik Büyükaşık to improve the business, they started weaving silk. Refik has brought silk cocoons from Bursa to Antakya and opened their workshop. As of today, the whole family is involved in this business and they have been weaving textiles with 15 looms. They have participated in different handicrafts fairs in numerous places including Tekirdağ and Ankara. Their works are recognized by the Turkish Ministry of Culture. Currently, Yasemin works on the designing process of the products. |
