Prof. Aydın Ayan was born in Trabzon, Çaykara, Şahinkaya village in 1953. He studied at Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts between 1972 and 1977. He began working as an assistant at the same academy in 1979. He completed his doctoral degree with proficiency in arts at Mimar Sinan University in 1983. He received a scholarship from British Council and went to England to study painting at London University’s Goldsmiths College between 1986 and 1987. Aydın served as an assistant in 1988 and became an Associate Professor in 1990 and Professor in 1998.
In 1993, Aydın received Eisenhower Exchange Fellowship and carried out his research on culture and art in the USA. Since 1975, he has had 25 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. He has won 15 awards in many painting competitions. His works can be seen in many public and private collections such as the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum, the State Museums in Ankara and Izmir, the Selcuk Yasar Museum in Izmir, the Ministry of Culture, Istanbul Modern, Contemporary Art Museum of Anadolu University, Hacettepe Art Museum in Ankara, Ataturk House in Suhut, Afyonkarahisar and the Eisenhower Foundation in Philadelphia, USA.
There are three books concerning the life and art of Ayan: “Aydın Ayan” written by Ahmet Oktay (Istanbul: Science and Art Gallery Publications, 1997); “Aydın Ayan” written by Kıymet Giray (Istanbul: Is Bank Culture and Art Publications, 1999) and “Aydın Ayan the Resistance of Sisyphus, 35th Art Anniversary Retrospective Exhibition” by Is Bank Culture and Art Publications in 2007. As of today, Prof. Ayan serves as the Department Chair and Vice Rector in Mimar Sinan University and teaches in the Painting Department.
