Burhan Alkar was born in Filibe in 1930. He graduated from the Department of Painting-Work at Gazi Education Institution in 1951. In 1958, he passed the sculpture modeling Assistantship examination issued by the same department. In 1960, he went to Paris with a fellowship and studied on sculpture, relief and composition at the Sculpture Monsieur Mougene’s workshop of Julien Academy in Paris for a year. He then continued his study on sculpture at the workshop of Monsieur Leyque in the Paris Fine Arts College (Beaux - Arts) between 1961and 1965 with a state grant.
Alkar taught Sculpture Modeling as an instructor at Gazi Education Institution during 1965-1977. Within this period, he made important contributions on introducing the sculpture not only in Ankara but also in Izmir, Samsun and Çukurova. Alkar has made nearly 25 monuments, two of which are in foreign countries. He has had 15 solo exhibitions with small sculptures and participated in many group exhibitions.
Recently Alkar makes small sculptures. He creates these sculptures as ceramic sculptures in high temperatures and of bronze with wax loss method at his own workshop in Ankara. He is a founder member of GESAM and United Painters and Sculptures Association.
