Elmas Deniz was born in Bergama in 1981. She graduated from the Painting Department in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dokuz Eylül University in 2003. In 2005, she participated in the AIWA artists international workshop, which was held in Beirut. In the following year, she attended IASPIS expert visitor program in Malmo-Stockholm, and FRAME expert visitor program in Helsinki. In the same year, she participated in the VASSL Artists international workshop in Karachi. In 2007, Deniz received an artist grant to attend a Berlin Goethe Institute Culture Program. In the same year, she participated in CPH Air residency program in Copenhagen. In 2008, she worked at Garanti Platform CAC for three months in Istanbul. Deniz attended the Danish International Artists exchange program (DIVA residency) for two months. In 2009, she participated in Sextant de Plus-La Friche Belle de Mai in Marseilles for two months. She received an artist grant for Pstoletto Foundation Cittadelarte Unidee residency in Biella in 2011. Deniz is interested in global power structures, state-control, urbanism, and globalization, as it is reflected in her organizational as well as artistic practice. Since 2002, she has had many solo exhibitions and projects, and participated in numerous group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. In 2012, Deniz was selected as one of semi-finalists for Full Art Prize 2012, which was the first contemporary art prize of Turkey.
Beside her artistic practices, Deniz is a writer and initiator of various artist run initiatives and self-organized structures. In 2002, she founded Kutu (Box) Portable Art Gallery with other members. Between 2004 and 2007, she was one of the founders and project directors of K2 Artist Initiative. Deniz is a founding editor of Merkezkaç publications, which was established in 2011. She currently lives and works in Istanbul.
