Elvan Alpay was born in Ankara in 1968. She finished primary school in Stockholm. After studying at Galatasaray high school in Istanbul, she got AFS scholarship and studied at Rochester East Ridge High School in America. She then entered the Faculty of Fine Arts of Marmara University in 1986 and studied at the workshop of Hüsamettin Koçan. After her graduation, she worked as an assistant at her alma mater for two years. She received her master’s degree at Marmara University after working for a short while at the Salzburg Academy. Alpay opened her first solo exhibition in Ankara in 1990. She has had many solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions in Ankara and Istanbul. Her three dimensional works, contrasting the familiar art objects, have also been exhibited in various international art centers such as Cologne, London, Düsseldorf, New York and Paris. Her works can be seen in several public and private collections in Turkey and abroad, including the Foundation Cartier Collection in Paris. As of today, Alpay lives and continues her work in Istanbul.
