Ergun Çağatay was born in Izmir in 1937. After graduating from Robert College, he studied at the Faculty of Law of Istanbul University. He started his career as a copywriter in an advertising agency. In 1968, he started working as a photo journalist for the Associated Press. He then worked for several companies such as Gamma Agency in Paris, and Time/Life in New York. In 1983, Çağatay was seriously wounded in a bombing at Paris Orly airport. When he recovered, he made a serial on the illustrated manuscripts in the Topkapi Museum in Istanbul that has since appeared in many journals world-wide from Japan to Brazil. He has published three books including Turkic Speaking Peoples (Munich: Prestel Verlag, 2006). His photographs have appeared in many major international magazines and books.
