Prof. Erol Deran was born in Polatlı, the district of Ankara in 1937. He took his first music lessons from his father Burhanettin Deran, who was a composer. He completed primary and middle school in various regions of Anatolia and Istanbul. He graduated from the Sabih Gözen’s Textile Design Workshop at the State Academy of Fine Arts in 1960. During his studies at the Academy, he also studied painting in the workshops of Prof. Sabri Berkel and Prof. Gevher Bozkurt.
Deran began working as a "kanun" player at the Istanbul Radio between 1961 and 1975. He finished his military obligation as a reserve officer in Ankara during 1961 and 1963. He continued his life as a musician in Ankara between 1963 and 1968. In 1968, Deran moved to Istanbul and returned to his previous position at the Istanbul Radio. He then served as a lecturer in the Turkish Music State Conservatory, which was founded in 1975 and became a part of the Istanbul Technical University in 1983. He retired from the Conservatory in 2004.
At the Istanbul Technical University and Turkish Music State Conservatory, Deran served as a member of the Board of Directors, Department Head of the Musical Instruments Education, of the Voice Training and of Fundamental Science, and the Director of the Plectrum Instruments Department. In 1984, he participated in the “Bolu and Life in Bolu” competition and won Honorable Mention. In 1999, Deran played the kanun and exhibited his paintings by slide show in the Budapest Szechenyi State Library. One of his paintings was selected in the top 20 amongst 22.000 paintings exhibited in a painting competition, which was organized by Winsor & Newton Company. As of today, Prof. Deran continues to paint in his workshop and teaches the kanun as an instructor at Haliç University Conservatory.
