Ertuğrul Ateş was born in Adana in 1954. He began painting in 1973 and took lessons from Halil Akdeniz, Mürşide İçmeli and İsmail Gümüş. He was graduated from the Painting Department at Gazi Institute of Education in 1976. In the same year, he went to London and continued his study at London Kingsway Princeton College and Bethnal Green Institute until 1979. In 1980, Ateş had his first exhibition in Istanbul. He continued his works in Istanbul until 1987, when he moved to the USA, and settled in New York. In 1988, Ateş had his solo exhibition in New York. Since then, he has had numerous solo exhibitions and participated in many group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad: Miami, Dallas, Los Angeles, Chicago, Palm Beach, Boston, South Hampton, Barcelona, Copenhagen, New York, Beijing and Istanbul. Currently Ateş lives in Istanbul and continues his work.
