Esma Paçal Turam was born in Istanbul in 1963. She graduated from the Sculpture Department in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Marmara University in 1987. She then started working as an assistant in the same department. In 1990 she attended the Department of Arts at Minnesota University as a visiting artist and worked on bronze molding. In 1994 she received a scholarship by the Austrian Government and studied paper sculpture at Prof. Andreas von Weizsacker’s workshop in the Salzburg Internationale Sommer Akademie für Bildende Kunst. Turam completed her doctorate on paper sculpture at the Social Sciences Institute of Marmara University in 1996. She then founded the paper workshop in the Sculpture Department of her alma mater. In 1998 she became an assistant professor. Turam resigned from Marmara University in 2000 and continues her work at her own studio in Istanbul.
