Esra Ersen was born in Ankara in 1970. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Marmara University in 1988, and continued her master’s degree at the alma mater. She then studied at Ecole Beaux-Arts de Nantes, Post-Diploma Program in Nantes between 1999 and 2000. Her works often deal with identity, how it is created and changes. Employing various media, from photography and video to installations, Ersen consistently explores the relationship between the individual and society, with an eye to how the various factors involved in this (such as ethnicity, education, and culture) can bind or divide communities. She also examines how the perception of others and cliches influence self-perception. The artist develops her works in intensive collaboration with different social groups, which she accompanies over a long period of time. Her approach is to be open to the development of the process, so that the potential of her partners and the situation become constitutive elements of her works. Ersen has had many solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions both in Turkey and abroad. As of today she Lives and works in Istanbul.
