Defne Tesal was born in Istanbul in 1985. She graduated from the Department of Stage Design, Costume and Puppetry in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in 2009. Tesal embroideries subjects of painting including streets, fields, woods on fabric with colorful wool and cotton. She also explores more abstract themes such as pain, peace, chaos, immobility and the gaze in movement. Besides embroidery, she expresses herself through illustration, doll making and stop-motion animated films. Tesal has held several solo exhibitions and participated in many group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. In 2016 she will attend three months artist residency program at the KulttuuriKauppila Art Center in Finland. She currently continues her work in Istanbul.
