Gül Ilgaz was born in 1962. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Mimar Sinan University in 1987. She attended the Writing and Thinking Program at Bard College in New York in 1992. She then studied Art Forum at Savannah College of Art and Design in the USA in 1996. In 2004, she went to Canada and attended a workshop of Informal Architect Residency at Banff Centre in Alberta. She taught Art at Robert College for 14 years.
Ilgaz uses photography and computer manipulated images, video projects and installations in her works. She combines her personal dilemmas with the society that she lives in, as well as the dilemma between east and west as context. She has had many solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad including Bulgaria, Slovenia, Macedonia, China, England, France, Belgium and Canada. Her work represented Turkey in the 50th Biennial of Venice. Ilgaz has given several conferences and workshops in Istanbul, Canada and France. She has also created an International Artist Residency Program and Public Art Project in a village in Turkey as a social activist artist. Her works can be seen in public and private collections including US consulate of Istanbul. Currently, Ilgaz lives and works in Istanbul.
