Gülay Semercioğlu was born in Istanbul in 1968. In 1981, she won second prize in a painting competition for high school students. She graduated from the Painting Department in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Mimar Sinan University in 1994. In 1993, she was awarded first prize in the Siemens Art Awards. The following year, she received Dr. Nejat Eczacıbaşı Art Museum Award in the Contemporary Artists, 15th Istanbul Exhibition. Semercioğlu completed her master’s degree at her alma mater in 1998. Between 1995 and 1998, she worked as a director of Derimod Art Center. In 1997, she co-founded Atölye Sanat. Semercioğlu creates three dimensional works, using a variety of simple materials such as plywood and enamel wire. Between 1999 and 2008, she taught as an instructor at Yeditepe University of Fine Arts. In 1999, she received an achievement award in a Painting Competition of the Turkey Jockey Club. Since 2008, she has taught as an instructor at Işık University of Fine Arts. Semercioğlu has held many solo exhibitions and has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. Currently, she lives and works in Istanbul.
