Gülten Akyan was born in Izmir. After graduating from Manisa Sports Academy in 1981, she worked as a teacher for 21 years. She then studied public management. To develop her mosaic art, she participated in a course in Revanna, Italy. Besides it, she took drawing lessons from Ekrem Kahraman and studied on art at Çekirdek Art Workshop in Istanbul. Akyan has had several solo exhibitions and has participated in many group exhibitions and symposiums in Turkey. Her works can be seen in many collections in Turkey and abroad. Akyan is a member of IFSAK and BASAF.
