Gürbüz Doğan Ekşioğlu was born in Mesudiye, the district of Ordu in 1954. He studied graphics at the State College of Fine Arts. He has drawn cartoons since 1977. Eksioğlu has had nine solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. His cartoons and illustrations were published in various newspapers and magazines like Forbes, the Atlantic, the New York Times as well as five covers of the New Yorker, including the famous one, dated 15 September 2003, a special edition for the second anniversary of 11 September 2001 attacks. He holds total 64 awards, (23 of which are international) including Sedat Simavi Visual Arts Prize in 1998. As of today, Ekşioğlu teaches as an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Marmara University and continues his work in Istanbul.
