İbrahim Balaban was born in Bursa, Seç village, Osmangazi in 1921. At the age of 16, he was arrested for cultivating Indian hemp. He spent in the Bursa Jail, where he met Nazım Hikmet, in 1942-1944, and 1947-1950. In jail, he started painting. From Hikmet, Balaban got practical knowledge about philosophy, sociology, economy and politics. and developed his skill in painting. Later, he explained the days with Nazım Hikmet in the book “Şair Baba ve Damdakiler”. Balaban had his first exhibition at the French Culture Center in Istanbul in 1953. He has had many solo exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. In his paintings, Balaban expresses the lives of people in Anatolia. He is a writer as well as a painter and has published 11 books. In 2008, Balaban performed the role of “Bülbül hoca” in the film “Mülteci”, which was directed by Reis Çelik. In 2012, his solo exhibition "Balabanizm" will be held at the International Art Center in Istanbul.
