Selim Birsel was born in Brussels in 1963. He finished Ecole de Beaux-Arts Grenoble in France in 1991. Between 1990 and 1991 he went to Institut des Hautes Etudes en Art Plastique in Paris. He then went to Turkey and taught in the Faculty of Fine Art and Architects at Bilkent University between 1993 and 1999. Since 1999, he has served in the Faculty of Arts and Social Science, Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design at Sabancı University.
