İsmail Ateş was born in Göle in 1960. He graduated from the Painting Department in the Faculty of Education at Gazi University in 1982. He completed his master’s degree and doctoral degree, proficiency in arts at Hacettepe University, Painting Department. He continued his post doctorate at the Art Department of City University of New York, Hunter College between 2002 and 2004. Ateş has had many solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions and biennials in Turkey and foreign countries. He has also attended national and international conferences and presented his papers. His works can be seen in many national and international collections. As of today, Ateş serves as a Department Chair in the Painting Department at Hacettepe University.
