Prof. İsmail Avcı was born in Terkos, Durusu village near Istanbul in 1939. He studied at the Art Department of the Ankara Gazi Institute for Education. From 1961 to 1973 he taught art at Sivas Pamukpınar and Bolu School for Male Teachers. He received the Turkish Government Scholarship and went to France during 1967 and 1968. In 1973 he organized youth art and poster exhibitions in Bolu and Ankara for the Turkish Ministry of Education’s celebrations within the context of the 50th Anniversary of the Republic. During 26 years from 1973 to 1999, he worked at Marmara University Atatürk Faculty of Education as a lecturer and at various times as assistant head, head or section head of the Art Department. From 1979 to 1981 he was a lecturer on print design at the Advanced School of Industrial Art and Technology of the State Academy of Fine Arts. He worked with eminent Turkish artists at the Print Studio of the Alte Graphics Art Centre in Çamlıca from 1975 to 1985. In 1984 the certificates he obtained in France were accepted as equivalent to a 4 year course of instruction and validated by the office governing higher degree diplomas. Furthermore, he went on to obtain a diploma from Marmara University after completing a 28 week course in Graphic Design. He earned a degree equivalent to a doctorate from Marmara University. In 1986 he became assistant professor and a tenured professor in 1992. In 1999 he retired from the Fine Arts Department of the Atatürk Educational Faculty of Marmara University. His book “Design, First and Last”, which contains 311 black and white and colored designs, was published in 1999. His works can be found in various public and private collections.
