Kemal İskender was born in Trabzon in 1949. He graduated studied painting in the workshop of Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu and of Neşet Günal, and graduated from the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts in 1972. Between 1972 and 1974, he studied stained glass and metal gravure at the Central School of Art and Design in London with a state fellowship. He completed his master’s degree at the Royal College of Art in 1977. After returning to Istanbul, İskender worked as an assistant in the Painting Department at the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts in 1978. In 1979, he has had his first solo exhibition in Ankara and Istanbul. Since then, İskender has had many solo exhibitions, and has participated in numerous group exhibitions. İskender has received several awards including Minton Award in England (1977), DYO Painting competition (1979) and award of merit in the New Movement Exhibition (1979). Currently, İskender continues to teach at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Mimar Sinan University.
