Kutluğ Ataman was born in Istanbul in 1961. After studying film at the University of California, Los Angeles, he completed his master’s degree at his alma mater in 1988. Ataman′s works primarily document the lives of marginalized individuals, examining the ways in which people create and rewrite their identities through self-expression, blurring the line between reality and fiction. He shot his first film “Serpent’s Tale (Karanlık Sular)” in 1994. In 1997, his 8 hours documentary video “Semiha Berksoy Unplugged” was shown in many important art biennials and film festivals. His second film “Lola+Bilidikid” (1998) was shown in the opening of the 49th International Berlin Film Festival Panorama Department in 1999. He won awards with this film in Turin, Oslo and Istanbul, and was given the Best Film Prize at the New Festival in New York and the Jury Special Prize at the Berlin Festival. His scenario “Palto” was awarded the Balkan Film Fond in 2003. Ataman was also awarded Best Director and Best Film Prize for his third film “2 Girls” (2005) at both Ankara and Antalya Film Festivals. He also received the Best Film Prize at the Asian Film Festival in India. His recent film “Journey to the Moon” (2009) was shown in the Official Selection at the 2009 International Istanbul Film Festival. At this film festival, he served as a chair of the Jury. This film was selected for the “Perspectives” Section at the 31st Moscow International Film Festival in 2009. It was also screened at the BFI 53rd Film Festival in 2009. This film will be shown at the 19th Brisbane International Film Festival in 2010.

Ataman entered the art world in 1997, when he participated in the 5th International Biennial, where he presented "Kutluğ Ataman’s Semiha Berksoy Unplugged". He was invited to the 48th Venice Biennial, where he presented “Women Who Wear Wigs”. His art works have been shown at Documenta (2002), the Venice Biennial (1999), the Biennials in Sao Paulo (2002), Berlin (2001) and Istanbul (1997, 2003 and 2007). In the same year, he was one of the four shortlisted artists for the Turner Prize, the most prestigious visual arts awards, which was organized by the Tate Gallery. Ataman was selected as the best visual artist by the Observer newspaper in England. In 2007, he was also chosen among the five of the most impact visual artists by Forbes Magazine. His works can be seen in major international collections, including MOMA New York, Thyssen Bornemisza Art Contemporary, Vienna, the Dimitris Daskalopoulos Collection, Athens and Carnegie Museum, Pittsburgh.
