Mahmut Karatoprak was born in Kayseri in 1953. He finished primary and middle school in Kayseri. After graduating from the State Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul in 1978, he worked as a graphic designer and caricaturist in different newspapers and magazines. During his education, Karatoprak received several awards in different competitions in Turkey and abroad. Three of his works were accepted in the Basel Caricaturists Museum. Between 1978 and 1979, he drew graphic design in various German publications. He also painted and researched in Bastei, Kalter Verlag. In 1983, Karatoprak started working in Frankfurter Kunstler Verein and participated in various exhibitions for 16 years.

Some of his paintings are made on wooden boxes, old chests and house doors older than 150 years old. The feeling of "having lived" is inseparable part of his work and shows its strength with every brush stroke. His works can be seen in private collections in Turkey, Switzerland, Germany and the UK. Since 1997, Karatoprak has been working in Istanbul and Kayseri in Turkey.
