Melike Abasıyanık Kurtiç was born in Erzurum in 1930. She graduated from the Department of Decorative Arts in the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts in 1955. She then worked at Eczacibaşı Ceramic Factory in 1960-1962. In 1963 she studied clay at the H. Köhler′s ceramic workshop in Denmark and worked as an artist at the Danish Royal Porcelain Factory in Copenhagen in 1963-1966. Kurtiç then studied glaze as a guest artist in the Ceramic Department of the Copenhagen Academy of Fine Arts in 1967-1968. She returned to Turkey and worked at the Ankara Institute for Mining Research and Exploration in 1968-1972. From 1971 to 1975 she worked at the Heinz-Theo Dietz Ceramic Studio in Germany. In 1973 Kurtiç was accepted to be a membership of the Nord-Rhein Vestfalen Province Chamber of Applied Fine Arts. She was also admitted as a member of the Gedok Union, based in Hamburg. Kurtiç held her first solo exhibition in Istanbul in 1963. Since then she has held many solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. Kurtiç is known for her spherical ceramics and sea urchins.
