Necmiye Gönenli was born in Konya in 1953. After finishing high school education in Gölcük, she studied at the Painting Department of the State Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul. In 1976, she participated in the First Young Amateur Artists Exhibition, which was organized by the Turkish Culture Foundation, and received a prosperity prize. After graduating from the academy in 1978, she started painting at her studio. In 1980, Gönenli received Golden Cherry Prize in the Traditional May Exhibition, which was held by the Association of Visual Artists. In the same year, she worked in the execution committee of the Association of Visual Artists; she had to stay 23 days under surveillance in the Istanbul Hasdal custodial prison because of the martial law investigations of the associations. While she was under surveillance, Gönenli helped arrested high school students with other theatre artists, who were also under surveillance, to prepare the Atatürk classroom. The case of association was acquitted following the Selimiye Military Court verdict. In 1981, she met Dutch artist Zeff Clement, and he encouraged her to have her painting solo exhibitions. She had her first solo exhibition at the Turquoise Art Gallery in Ankara. During the opening ceremony, she was awarded the encouragement price. Since then, Gönenli has had solo exhibitions and has participated in many group exhibitions in Turkey. Her artwork can be seen in many collections in Turkey and abroad. She also made the relief and mosaic type art panels for the metro stations in Istanbul. Currently, Gönenli continues painting together with making stained glass and wall paints.
