Prof. Dr. Özer Kanburoğlu was born in Istanbul in 1964. He graduated from the Department of Stage and Visual Arts in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Mimar Sinan University in 1994. He completed his master′s degree in the Department of Photography of the Institute of Fine Arts at Marmara University in 1998; his doctoral degree on Journalism in the Institute of Social Science at Istanbul University in 2002.
Kanburoğlu worked for different magazines as an assistant editor and editor. He has had many exhibitions such as “İzlenimler” (The Impressions), “Detaylar” (The Details), “Sepetçiler” (The Basket Makers) and “Mimariler” (The Architectures) in various activities. In many national and international photo contests, Kanburoğlu has won approximately 140 awards including the Young Artist of Europe Award (France-1993), Etos Culture Award (Sweden-1994), Ballantines Photography Award (England-1995), The Okamato Prize (Japan-1996), Government Photo Contest Grand Prize (1996), The Cup Award of Şinasi Barutçu (1997,1998,1999), Golden Boll Photography Award (1995,1996,1998,2003), the 19th Fiap Dia Biennial’s Silver Medal (1997) TUBİTAK Photography Award (1997), Şark Hayat (Koç Allianz) Photography Award (1994,1996,1999, 2002), Super Circuit Bronze Medal (Avusturia-2000) Pamuk Bank Photography Award (1999), International Photography Federation (FIAP) Honorary Award (Makedonia-2000), Asea Brown Boweri Grand Prize (Switzerland -2000), Giovanni Crespi Prize (Italy-2002), Golden Medal at the First Balkan Photo Contest (Greece-2003), Mehmet Baltacı Award at Adana Rotary Club International Photo Contest (Adana-2003), Asea Brown Boweri Grand Prize (Switzerland, 2004), Mention at International Nasrettin Hoca Photo Contest (Konya, 2005), Honorable Mention of Fotoclup TG Mures Contest (Romania, 2005) and Sami Güner Prize (2007, 2008, 2009).
Kanburoğlu has attended lots of national and international conferences. His papers, which are more than twenty, were accepted to national and international symposiums. His articles, which are more than seventy, have been published in several magazines. His photos have been exhibited in over forty countries. Kanburoğlu was honored with AFIAP (Artist of FIAP) due to his achievement of international contest from FIAP (Federation of International Art Photography) in 2001. He accomplished the research projects: “Kaybolan Meslekler” (The Disappeared Jobs) in 2003, “Denemeler” (The Experiments) in 2004, “Taking and Archiving Photos of Atatürk” in 2007, “Atatürk and Woman” in 2008. Kanburoğlu was chosen as a “Photographer of Millennium” at “Photographers of the End of Millennium” project, which was supported by the Spanish Photography Confederation in 2003. He became an Assistant Professor in 2002, an Associate Professor in 2004 and a Professor in 2009. Kanburoğlu has published many books including “Temel Fotoğraf Bilgisi Ders Notları” (The Lesson Notes of Basic Photography Knowledge), “Temel Fotoğraf Bilgisi” (Basic Photography Knowledge), “Fotoğrafta Çekim Teknikleri” (The Shooting Techniques at Photography), “Basında Haber Fotoğrafı Kullanımı” (Using News Photography at Journalism), “A’dan Z’ye Fotoğraf” (The Photography from A to Z), “Yeni Başlayanlar İçin Fotoğraf” (The Photography for Beginners), “Fotoğrafta Kompozisyon” (Composition in Photography), “Mimari Fotoğraf” (Architectural Photography), “Amatörler İçin Dijital Fotoğraf” (Digital Photography for Amateurs), “Dijital Fotoğraf Rehberi” (The Guide of Digital Photography), catalogues of “Mimariler” (The Architectures), “Sepetçiler” (The Basket Makers) and “Öyküler” (The Stories). Kanburoğlu is a member of FIAP (Federation of International Art Photography) and FOTOGEN. He has also worked as a Director and Director of Photography for Documentary Movies. Currently, Kanburoğlu works as a Department Chair in the Department of Photography of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Kocaeli University.
