İsmet Birsel was born in Izmir in 1934. He studied Art History and graduated from Robert College in 1953. He studied painting with Bedri Rahmi. Birsel continued his studies in Law in Paris and graduated from the school in 1957. He took up a position in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and represented Turkey in various countries as an ambassador. Aside from his diplomatic work, Birsel continued to paint without break. He developed his technique by himself surveying great master’s works when he visited galleries and museums in Paris, Brussels, Genève and Roma. In 1955, he first exhibited his painting in a group exhibition in Paris. Since then, Birsel has had many solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. He became a member of Pulchri Studio, which was known as “Lahey School” founded by professional artists in Netherlands. In 1991, Birsel published his book titled “Belleğimizdeki Tablolar”. As of today, he continues his work in Ankara.
