Nurettin Erkan was born in Elazığ. He graduated from Bitlis Teacher’s Boarding High School in 1985. In 1986 he entered the Department of Aquacultural Engineering at Istanbul University but withdrew. He then entered the Painting Department at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University and graduated in 1993. Erkan started teaching painting when he was an art student and continued teaching painting for seventeen years at his Mediterranean Art Studio in Istanbul.
Erkan has held many solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. In 2005 he was selected as the president of the Turkish Committee of the International Association of Art (IAA). He resigned from this position after serving two periods. In 2007 he received a grand award and honorary degree at the 4th Tashkent Contemporary Art International Biennial in Uzbekistan. In 2010 Erkan held a week-long public live performance by painting a 39 x 6 feet canvas at the XIIIth International Lycian/Kaş Culture and Art Festival in Kaş, Turkey.
His paintings can be seen in several art collections, and has been published in distinguished articles. Erkan has been included in Masters of Today, a London based art encyclopedia, which features contemporary young masters. In addition to painting, he writes short stories published in the literary journals of Turkey. Erkan currently continues painting at his studios in Istanbul, Turkey and Madison-WI, USA.
