Tayfun Serttaş was born in 1982. He graduated from the Department of Social Anthropology at Istanbul University in 2004 with a thesis titled “Urban Anthropology”. He completed his master′s degree at the Interdisciplinary Art Program in the Faculty of Art and Design of Yıldız Technical University in 2007 with his thesis “Photography And Minorities In Istanbul In The Context Of Modernism And Cultural Representation.”
During his education, Serttaş wrote a series of articles on the topic of “minorities and the city” for various periodicals. Since 2000, Serttaş has taken part in numerous domestic and international academic projects. Themes he works on include urban anthropology, social gender, the cultural heritage of ′the other,′ the critique of civil society, the sociology of everyday life, minorities, urban transformation, sex workers, immigration and change, socio-political strategies and minority politics. He continues his studio work within the scope of Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center’s Istanbul Residency program. He writes for the Agos newspaper. In 2012, he was among semi-finalists for Full Art Prize 2012, which was the first contemporary art prize of Turkey. Serttaş is a recipient of the 2014 TCF Cultural Exchange Fellowship. He currently lives and works in Istanbul and Bodrum.
